Mutharika advocates economic independence

President Peter Mutharika has emphasised the need for the country to strive for economic independence as Malawi marks 62 years of independence today.

The President made the remarks in his Independence Day message released yesterday, saying the vision prompted his administration to cancel government-funded Independence Day celebrations this year.

Said Mutharika: “Our mission is not yet complete, the next frontier is economic independence.

“In line with this aspiration, this year’s Independence Day will be commemorated differently, through prayers only.”

According to Mutharika, all public financial resources budgeted for the celebrations will be redirected towards economically productive sectors to alleviate the poverty that has deepened over the last five years.

He said he is confident that, if Malawians join hands and work together, the dream of making the country an economically independent nation with equitably shared wealth can be realised.

“Despite global natural, political and economic headwinds, food security remains under control and macroeconomic stability is steadily taking root.

“This is laying fertile ground for investments that will generate foreign exchange, create jobs and grow our economy for the benefit of all,” he said.

Meanwhile, social commentator Lucky Mbewe has welcomed the President’s decision, describing it as vital to the country’s economic recovery.

“Malawians are going through tough times, and there is no need for lavish spending when things are difficult,” he said.

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace national coordinator Lewis Msiyadungu also commended Mutharika, stating that the President’s decision demonstrates mature leadership and strong governance.

“We hope that the resources saved will be channelled into social service delivery for the benefit of all Malawians,” he said.

On June 14 this year, Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi issued a statement announcing that Mutharika had directed that there would be no government-funded Independence Day celebrations as part of the government’s austerity measures.

He directed that this year’s Independence Day commemoration be marked by a national thanksgiving and supplication programme.

Malawi gained independence from Britain on July 6 1964.
